Use the Sea to See the IslandsWant to get away from the maddening crowd? Certainly you have determined that is the case as you have chosen a Caribbean Vacation in the US Virgin Islands. But the real question is “How isolated would you like to be?” If the thought of an organized and ritually scheduled tour is not your style you may consider renting a powerboat more to your liking. In fact, you may not ever want to return. There are a variety of choices. Many vendors offer powerboats with or without a captain. You do not need a captain’s license to drive the boat but you will need sufficient experience captaining on the water – 50 hours or more to be exact. If you choose a captain you will have a personal guide for the day. Simply tell your captain what you are interested in doing and away you go. Have experience and do not want a captain? No problem. You will be given a comprehensive boat briefing prior to motoring away. Most boats will include full bimini tops to escape the sun and cushioned platforms for the sun worshipers. Built-in ice coolers for your refreshments and large dry storage areas to keep your towels and beach attire ready for action. If snorkeling is in your plans you will be fitted for snorkeling gear complete with floatation bibs. Some boats even have a swim platform and ladder for easy access in and out of the boat. The types of boats offered can feature engines ranging from 90hp to upwards of twin 200hp and anywhere in between. Fountain and Mako are the more popular brands. Choose a V-hull for more comfortable traveling. Some vendors offer boats with cuddy cabins for even more sun protection. Expect to pay anywhere from $295 to $320 for your boat. Be aware that fuel and oil is extra and will be added to your tab when you return. If you have hired a captain expect to pay anywhere from $60 to $120 for their time excluding gratuity. Some of the companies that rent powerboats can be found online at http://www.st-thomas.com/nautinymph.com or http://www.seeski.com and on St. John at http://www.cbw-stjohn.com The pleasures that await you are too incredible to even describe. Suffice it to say that with your boat you can create any experience you desire. Many fantastic snorkeling sites will be within your reach as most are accessible only by water. Consider visiting the Indians at Pelican Island. Large coral formations inhabited by colorful and diverse types of fish surround this rocky uninhabited island. Visit the Caves at Normal Island. This was the inspiration behind Treasure Island, however, I believe the only treasure you will find is nature’s own exotic fish and coral.
