Tripping the USVI

Tired of the winter snow? Do you grumble with every weather forecast? Are you spending most of your waking hours blankly staring out your window mentally transposing the bleak landscape into a tropical paradise? Well I’m no doctor and I have never played one on TV but I’d bet you are suffering from the winter blues.

There are some remedies for this ailment. Should you be so lucky as to have vacation time and the means to get away certainly a trip to the US Virgin Islands would be just what the doctor ordered. Never fear dear one if you are not able to traverse the globe now, just hop around the Internet and mentally transport yourself to balmy beaches. Make a fruity frozen drink and you have got the next best thing.

One of the nice things about visiting the US Virgin Islands is that it is easy for any US citizen to vacation. There are no entry requirements. You need no visa but you will need proof of citizenship such as a passport, voter’s registration card or birth certificate. A passport is required for travel to neighboring islands.

The language spoken is English, with a touch of singsong lilt. Currency is the US dollar including the British Virgin Islands. There are US banks on the islands should you need a cash advance. Your doctor will most likely inform you the only major health risk is sunburn and recommend extreme sunscreen, applied topically every two hours or as needed. The phone system is the same as the US, 1 + Area Code + Phone Number. And you will find the familiar US Postal Service delivering letters and packages to your hotel.

“But I can’t just pick up and go right now”, you say? Well, here are a few sites to check out for a taste of the tropics.

Go on a day trip to the British Virgin Islands with one of these tour operators: http://home.att.net/~captainnautica/ http://www.charterboat.vi/stormypetrel.h... http://limnoscharters.com/

How about a day sail on one of these boats? http://www.thedancingdolphin.com/ http://www.newhorizons.daysails.com/ http://www.sailyachtnightwind.com/photos...

Or how about just pretending you are on one of the fabulous beaches lazily taking in the scenic view? http://www.st-john.com/

It's time to reapply your sunscreen. You may want to put on that hat, too. Oh, and by the way, make a frozen drink for me.
