Planning Your Trip to the USVI

Your reservations are confirmed and the anticipation of your upcoming trip to the USVI consumes every waking (and sleeping) thought. As you prepare, you extract summer items from your wardrobe and do some last minute shopping for that new bathing suit. Quite often I've heard "What do I bring?" from hotel guests when booking an activity or tour. Ask yourself that same question before you get on the plane and you will save yourself time and a few headaches.

The US Virgin Islands are a US territory. This means that if you are a US citizen, you have a little more flexibility with the identification you need to have with you. While it is not required, it is best to have a current passport. If you have no passport, a photo ID such as your driver's license will get you through customs. If you are not a US citizen, you will need your current passport and visa entry.

I have often recommended excursions to the British Virgin Islands while visiting. These island hopping day trips are an absolute delight. You must have proof of citizenship when participating. All too often I have seen the incredible disappointment from a guest who was all fired up to go and then discovered they did not have the proper paperwork. US citizens should have a US Passport. Don't sweat bullets if you have no passport, there are two other options. You can dust off your birth certificate or use your voter's registration card in addition to your picture ID. Sorry, a picture ID alone will not get you on board. Check out http://www.b-v-i.com/ The British Virgin Islands Online Travel Guide for complete information of these beautiful islands.

"I haven't a thing to wear!" My husband has heard that all too many times as the statement echoes from my cavernous closet. The dress is casual so men - leave your coat and tie at home! Ladies lightweight summer dresses, short-sleeved shirts and shorts with sandals are the norm. Sun protection is a must! Sunglasses, brimmed hats and sunscreen should be worn each day. You'll spend a considerable amount of time in the water so bring two bathing suits. Modesty is the best policy when shopping, dining or participating in any land-based activity so dress conservatively. Men - wear shirts and keep them buttoned. Ladies - no bathing suits.

Should you bring snorkel gear? That's up to you. All tours offer snorkel gear with their packages and you can rent gear from your hotel activity concession. Bring your mask, snorkel and fins with you if you own a set and are partial to their comfort fit.
