A simplified, uniform computation of sales taxes blurs some of the differences between anti- and pro-tax forces over the Web. E-tailers and technology companies complain about the difficulty in computing and collecting sales taxes in the many different states and localities. A uniform system removes that argument. Many of the technology companies building e-business systems also help develop uniform technical standards that make these new technologies possible. A standard sales tax system can have the same effect of making simple inexpensive systems for tax collection more feasible.
