Going to Boot CampSuddenly, we're all identically bald, if not identically bleeding, and we're going to stay that way (bald, not bleeding) for the next eight weeks, which is exactly the point. Besides simplicity of hygiene (you don't have to wash your hair, just your head, and be careful of the scabs), it's much easier to become part of the group when all of the group members look the same. Yes, boot camp does teach history, terminology, and even some basic leadership and followership, all of which can be done much better than they are now, but the most important thing it teaches is teamwork. Businesses pay big bucks to send their workers to mock boot camps for the lessons that military boot camps teach their students for free. That in and of itself is the biggest argument in favor of mandatory service, and one of the few things that the military still gets right, and that American society doesn't.
