Just Shoot Me an E-mail

Now I’m back at sea again after my second shore tour, and email is everywhere. Guys and gals write back and forth, usually off the ship, sometimes to another person on the ship (not that there’s ever any fraternizing going on… nooooo), and sometimes we even conduct business.

The funny part of this whole e-mail thing is the guys who never had to deal with having basically no communication with home at all. The younger guys who grew up with this stuff in the 90s have no clue, and lose their collective minds when the system goes down, or we lose connectivity, which happens quite often. It makes me wonder how they ever got cut loose from their mother’s umbilical cords. I even know one guy who was so freaked out about it that he literally had trouble getting through the day. I finally had to scream at him, “Dude, it’s just email! We’re still going to get home on time! Which is more important?” Here’s a note. Don’t try to put things into perspective for someone who’s lost his mind. It won’t work.

E-mail is a very nice thing. It really does make some things much easier, and just complicates others, and sometimes it’s just a distraction. Overall, I think it’s been great for us to be able for the most part to keep up with home in almost real time. But sometimes, I really do want to just hold a handwritten page telling me that I’m loved.
