Haunted MarylandFall and more specifically the holiday of Halloween is by far my most favorite time of the year. The fall colors, costumes, festivals and just the crisp feeling to the air make this into a magical season. Quite a few other people tend to think of it as a time for horror movies and some good-natured haunted house scares. Although not personally a fan of horror movies or really anything that’s designed to scare me it would be hard not to notice that the sequel to Blair Witch Book of Shadows has hit the theatres. Even though it has not received the best reviews around, enough people are interested in it that the small town of Burkittsville, MD prepares itself for the onslaught of phone calls and tourists. For those of you that are not familiar with the story, Burkittsville is the alleged town of the Blair Witch and where the story first begins Most of the Blair fans however leave disappointed once they find out the reality behind the movie. Burkittsville is a small community of about two hundred people and so far in its history there has never been even a legend remotely like that of the Blair Witch variety. To even further the letdown there are not even any Black Hills to go wander in. As a matter of fact it is so completely not ready for tourism they do not even boast a hotel! Despite these repeated reminders, there are still many who insist that what they have seen is based on reality and they flock to Burkittsville to check it out. A few residents have decided embracing the new tourism is for the best and have welcomed the sightseers with open arms by selling t-shirts and even oddly enough vials of Burkittsville dirt and stick dolls. Most of the residents however, are not looking forward to the increased traffic and mayhem. Recently their main roads were shut down due to repaving and it was a happy coincidence indeed as it allowed for fewer cars to be allowed in town. If you’re interested in some of the real legends from the area you can check out the Travel Channels guide. Or for a real ghostly treat you can travel about an hour away and visit Ellicott City, MD which has more reported ghostly happenings than any other place in Maryland. It is such a hotbed of activity they offer a ghost tour year round!
