ANSWERS

1. He had no middle name.

2. His older brother was Lawrence Washington, who became something of a father figure to George, since the two young men had lost their father at a young age.

3. Mary Washington was the mother of our nation's father. A college in Virginia is named in her honor.

4. Washington was a surveyor, developing a familiarity with much of the North American countryside. His familiarity with the frontier and the terrain made him a valuable asset to the British during the French and Indian War, and the knowledge came in handy during his generalship of the Continental Army many years later.

5. Washington married Martha Parke Custis, a wealthy widow. The union made Washington one of the wealthiest men in Virginia.

6. After skirmishing with a French and Indian party, killing an ambassador and triggering open hostilities between France and England in North America, Washington constructed a defensive fortification on poor terrain and named it "Fort Necessity." He suffered his first defeat after taking numerous casualties and being forced to surrender.

7. General Edward Braddock commanded the fateful British expedition to Fort Duquesne. Braddock's force was ambushed and mauled by French and Indian troops. He was mortally wounded and lost close to two-thirds of his army. It was the worst defeat in British history up until that time.

8. Approving a nomination by John Adams, the Continental Congress named George Washington the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army on June 15, 1775. He formally assumed command of the army on July 3, 1775, following the battle at Breed's Hill and one full year before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

9. Washington won only three battles outright (Trenton, Princeton, and Yorktown). However, shortly after taking command of the army, he forced the British out of Boston by placing cannon on Dorcester Heights, without having to actually fire a shot. And he later fought British General Clinton to a draw at the Battle of Monmouth, after rallying his forces from a bungled initial attack and chaotic retreat. Washington's demonstration of resolve at Monmouth set up a stalemate in the North and compelled the British to focus their energies in the southern campaign.
