The rise of Atlantis has been referred to as the key to the Golden Age - the rebirth of universal peace, harmony, love and happiness. This rebirth is said to happen now as we are entering the new millennium, the Age of Aquarius. If this is true, then it is not surprising that scientists, scholars, explorers, psychics, and anyone else even vaguely curious in the powers of the ancient civilization, have searched for the yet to be discovered lost continent for centuries.
Edgar Cayce a renowned psychic, became a recognized advocate of a factual Atlantis in the 20th century. Cayce claimed to be a reincarnated Atlantean and designated a spot near the Bermuda island of Bimini as the location of the sunken continent. It goes without saying that he blamed the disappearances in the triangle on the lost continent. He explained that Atlanteans possessed powerful "fire crystals" that went out of control, destroying the continent, and that these crystals still send out energy waves which interfere with passing planes and ships.
Even the Greek philosopher Plato spoke of Atlantis in his writings dated back to 370 B.C. Plato claimed that there was a prosperous and powerful nation that existed in peace for centuries and blamed its destruction by a great flood on the rising greed of the people. The similarity to the story of Noah in the old testament can't be missed, and many based their faith on the existence of Atlantis from Plato's words, yet there is always the chance that the third party source he retrieved his information from wasn't so reliable.
The psychic Edward Cayce prophesized that Atlantis would rise in 1968 or 1969 but of course it didn't and no one has found scientific evidence that it was actually really there or anywhere else in the world. But with the similarities in cultures that have developed on either side of the Atlantic Ocean, some believe that Atlantis could have been a stretch of land that connected these civilations, a type of "missing link."
Whether fact or fiction, Atlantis has become a type of symbolic savior, for its return represents salvation for mankind - a heaven on earth where people can exist in pure contentment. Don't we all have hopes for our own heaven, be it the pearly gates, reaching a goal that we strive for every day, or winning the million dollar jackpot? Atlantis has existed as a cultural symbol for hope for a better life and will continue to exist, either as a cultural myth or a undiscovered civilization beneath the ocean.
