Part Two: The Feminine

Obviously, this short article is going to fail to describe just what being female has meant in the history of the world. We could write volumes of books just on this subject, or even about men, for that matter. Women have been goddesses, wives, mothers, lovers, sisters, children and so much more. So, let's zoom in a bit and look at what is feminine from a symbolic point of view.

Femininity is receptivity. It is intuitive, emotional, beautiful, nurturing, sensual. This is the symbol of the feminine. These are characteristics that we all possess, whether we are physically male or female. Now, it is obvious that on a general basis, women seem to possess (or express) these traits more than men do. This does not mean that men do not have these traits somewhere in their psychology, nor does it mean that women who do not feel that they can automatically possess these traits are "lesser" women.

There have been many mythological women who showed different manifestations of the feminine. One was Venus. Venus is sensual, self-indulgent, beautiful, emotional and quite receptive. It was no accident that the planet in astrology that came to represent these things in our personalities was named after this goddess. The other major feminine archetype in astrology is the Moon. The Moon represents our core of emotion, our ability to nurture and be nurtured and our reactions to things around us.

Now, we must ask ourselves if men are simply conditioned by outside influences (parents, religion, schooling) to not openly express many of the Venusian or Lunar archetypes on a regular basis. I doubt this is the case. I think it is highly possible that there is a greater scheme at work, and that things are supposed to be the way that they are between men and women. Astrology tells us that we all have these traits. Women tend to use them; men tend to project them, however. This is not an attempt to male bash in any way...next week we will take a look at the masculine! Once we take a look at that, this will all come together and have a basic point that I hope you come back to find out!
