Symbology and Dreams

Sigmund Freud was a trailblazer. He was the first to record respected thoughts that dreams were more than just a series of nonsensical, random images. While there were certainly others before him who had an understanding of the role that dreams play in our lives, he was the first to relate these ideas in a way that the common person would understand and many would deem acceptable. Of course, there was the Freudian notion that most dreams were of a sexual nature, while today we view that somewhat differently.

Are the symbols we see when we are asleep universal in their meanings? Or are they as individual as each dreamer?

This is indeed a debate that has gone on for ages. There are many dream "cookbooks" that would lead you to believe that each symbol in a dream is the same for you as it is for the next person. In some cases this may be true, but in others it is certainly quite the opposite.

If you are having a dream, for instance, where you find yourself in the middle of a schoolroom or office wearing only your underwear, you can probably bet that this is a dream about embarrassment or a fear of being vulnerable in some way. However, a dream about a mouse might go either way. If you love meeces to pieces, this may be a dream regarding contentment. If you fear mice, this could be a dream about having to face a fear or accomplish something that you do not think you can follow through with. If you just hate mice and think all nasty little rodents belong in traps, this may be a dream about having to deal with something that disgusts you in daily life, like your job or housework.

So, you see, in dreams the key is emotional response. The real symbology in dreams is emotion. What you are feeling during the day about something is going to be translated into a symbol in your dreams. It may seem totally unrelated, but as long as it evokes the same emotional response, it is completely related. Beyond OBE's and spirit communications, the main purpose of dreams seems to be to enable you to psychologically release feelings that you have pent up during the day in a controlled environment. If you did not allow yourself to feel during the day so that you could work more efficiently or relate to others in a professional way, these feelings have to come out somewhere. It has been proven that sleep and dream deprivation cause mental instability and, possibly, insanity.
