The Magick in Symbols

© Nancy Leigh Jobes

When most people think of the symbolism of applications such as astrology, tarot, or other oracles, the ideas of occult and magick come to mind. We think of forces beyond our understanding. We may even think it is some strange unknown that is unexplainable and possibly not to be "messed with", even evil.

Considering the idea that these things are not bunk, there is always a thought of a possibility that there is some magick associated with these things. Yet, we once thought as a race that the Sun moved around the Earth by magick and have thought different forms of science, like lightning or fire, were magick. We now know that the Earth revolves around the Sun, that the apparent motion of the Sun was just an illusion. Now we know that these things are simply a part of nature, we understand them and have even come to even expect their occurrences. So, what is magick if we have to redefine it as we evolve?

Is magic a show run by someone like David Copperfield? We do know that is actually illusion and slight of hand. Though, as a child or even at times as an adult, it feels magickal to watch a show with pageantry, gallantry, and amazing feats.

Is magick the birth of a child? A first kiss? A beautiful wedding day? A trip to Disney World? Or, is magick simply a feeling?

When you think of magick do you think of pagan or Wiccan spells, amulets, or tinctures? Are these items truly magick in and of themselves, or are they simply tools through which an individual expresses the magick within themselves?

In the end, these outer things seem to do something to bring the magickal experiences to us. But the magick is in the way we feel about the experience, the perspective from which we encounter the experience. Your brother may have had a lousy time at your magickal wedding. To you, it was a wonderful, incredible night. The magick comes from within.

So it is with the magick of symbology. There is no magick that can be measured in a tarot card. There are no planets putting forces upon us. The magic is in you. You make the symbols work in your life. Your magick and the symbols we use to help make the magick are all a part of nature like lightning or fire.

Join us back here again to read and discuss how we use symbols and tools to create our magickal experiences and to find out what makes some symbols "Universal"!

I love this new direction, Nancy! We not only get astrology, we get psychology, philosophy, and all kinds of neat stuff! You can cover a broader area and you're off to a great start.

I'm really loo ...
