It would be safe to say that since there has been sentient life on this earth, folks have pondered on the question of fate or free will. Some folks will stick to their guns, deciding that they are the ones in charge of the outcome of their lives, while other peoples and cultures have had firm belief in fate or predestination. Still others may change their view on this several times within their lives or think that there is a little of each present in our existence.
How many times have you told yourself that if something was meant to be, it will be? Whether it is in the context of a relationship, getting a new home, or having a child, most folks will say that at least one time in their lives they have gone on faith that their higher power or destiny would provide for them what they are meant to have. It is usually the experience of synchronicities in life that make us feel that way. How can we ignore the times where we were in the exact right place at the right time or the absolute wrong place at the wrong time? When things seem to go completely wrong or completely right, and either ecstasy or irony falls right into place like a hand in a glove, it is awfully hard to doubt that there is some kind of higher purpose involved in our lives. But is there? This is obviously a question that cannot be proven either way. We cannot know beyond what we believe if the episodes we experience are random, coinciding events or, alternatively, part of a path whether chosen or bestowed upon us. However, if your belief system can be open enough to explore astrology, you probably came here to find out what astrology says about Fate and Free Will. It would seem, from an astrologer's point of view, that life is a mix of both concepts. Natal astrology will outline the path and personality into which we were born. How we use the astrological map of this path is a matter of free will. Astrology, when used in a modern psychological/esoterical application, is not a divinatory tool. While there are forms of astrology that are used for prediction and divination, there are a growing number of folks who are gravitating to a modern form of astrology that allows free will and choices to come into play. In this philosophy, there is a chosen path, but your personal mythology will have a great impact on how you express and modify your path. From a psychological standpoint, personal mythology is your belief system. You accrue your personal mythology from parents, environment, religion, and personal experience. It can and does encompass everything from how you perceive male vs. female to your opinions on education. Astrology may show why you choose to pick up your personal myths, but your mythology is the result of "nurture" and environment, not fated via astrology or anything else.
