Aspects are degrees of distance between planets in Astrology. Certain distances show specific relationships between the planets' symbols and how they show up in our lives. Think of aspects as a conjunction in a sentence, like "and' or "or." Aspects are the tools that allow the astrologer to put the entire chart together. They are extremely essential for understanding the entire chart in synastry. Without a working knowledge of aspects, you cannot see the chart as a whole or interpret the symbols correctly.
The following aspects are by no means a complete list. We will eventually go through all of them, even the most minor and obscure. This list of four aspects is commonly used in astrology and simply the one that should be memorized and understood first. It is also important to realize that astrologers allow orbs for the aspects. An orb is an allowance of a few degrees on each side of the exact aspect where the aspect is still considered to be viable. I am personally conservative with orbs on most of the aspects, though I will allow the traditional 8° for the conjunctions and oppositions. Note: While I add in here the traditional positive and negative aspect properties of the aspects, in my experience I find that nothing is static as positive or negative. Like everything else in astrology, it is how you use the aspect towards your own growth that matters. I believe everyone interested in astrology should learn the traditional ways, but should also understand that with our contemporary understanding of human psychology there are many ways that aspects can be used. In that spirit, I also list the pluses and minuses of living with each aspect. The Aspects Conjuction - The Conjunction is a 0° aspect with an orb of about 8° in either direction. In a conjunction, the planets are right next to one another. A conjunction is traditionally thought to be a "positive" or "harmonious" aspect. This aspect combines the planets' or angles' symbols involved so that they work as one. The symbols are combined in a way that they become one. When the conjunction is used well, it can be a powerful place in the chart, and sometimes a great talent. Used irresponsibly, it can show that the person acts with excess in that area of life. An exact conjunction with the Sun is called combust. Three or more planets in conjunction with one another is called a stellium.
