Polarities, Triplicities, and Quadriplicities

[ptqsuite.jpg]Before we begin the signs, it is essential to know how they are categorized. The signs are split up several different ways, so that each has a unique mix of quality, element, and polarity.

Polarities

There are 12 signs, and they are split into two polarities, each polarity with six signs. They are: Masculine (also called Positive) and Feminine (also called Negative). Does this scream stereotype, or what? Well, first you have to understand that the "masculine" and "feminine" connotations were given many, many years ago when folks weren't as P.C. as they are today. From a modern day, psychological standpoint, we can now view them a little differently.

The Masculine or Positive polarity is better named "Assertive." The signs that fall under the Masculine category all have an assertive energy about them. The Feminine or Negative polarity is better explained as "Receptive." The signs that fall into this category tend to soak things up.

The Masculine/Assertive signs are: Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius.

The Feminine/Receptive signs are: Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces

Essentially, the person with a preponderance of planets in one polarity would display more assertion or receptivity in action or personality, depending on which polarity dominated the chart.

Triplicites

There are four elements used in western astrology, and each of the four elements break the signs down into four groups of three each. Each group of three signs is called a triplicity. If I didn't lose you yet, keep reading!

The first element is Fire. Fire signs are just like you would think if you were to imagine the element of fire itself. Fire moves quickly, it has spark, it grows quickly and is explosive. If you can picture that in your mind, you can understand the idea behind the Fire signs. The Fire triplicity consists of: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. All of the Fire signs fall into the Masculine/Assertive polarity.

The second element is Earth. Earth signs also can be visualized. They are grounded, firm, steady, dependable, show where you have the ability to get things done, and are sometimes stubborn. The Earth triplicity consists of: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. All of the Earth signs fall into the Feminine/Receptive polarity.

The third element is Air. Air signs are free-flowing, intellectual, humanitarian, and social. The Air triplicity consists of: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. All of the Air signs are Masculine/Assertive.

The fourth element is Water. Water signs are intense, deep, emotional, and intuitive. The Water triplicity consists of: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. The Water signs are all Feminine/Receptive.
