Saturn: Growing Pains

Saturn resides in our solar system as the next planet beyond Jupiter. Saturn is most famous astronomically for its beautiful rings. Astrologically, however, it is famous for being a planet of sorrow and restriction. Saturn is traditionally known as a planet whose expression of energy is out of our control, something that happens to us that we cannot change or channel for our use. In modern times and belief of free will, astrologers have found ways to personalize Saturn's symbol from a psychological standpoint for the purpose of getting the most out of Saturn's lessons in our lives. Saturn rules Capricorn and the Tenth House. This tells us that Saturn has a focus on climbing toward inner goals and growth.

Wherever Saturn reigns in our astrological makeup will usually be an area of our lives where we find restrictions and limitations placed on us that seem to come from an outside source. This can manifest as ongoing illness, handicaps, bad relationships, problems with co-workers, or a whole host of other maladies depending on the placement in the natal chart. In transit, Saturn will bring these things into the area it is going through usually temporarily or as the beginning of a long cycle of problems or limitations. As bad as this may sound, like any other planet symbol, it also has its redeeming qualities.

Some of our greatest lessons in life are learned by facing, working with and overcoming limitations. If we didn't have restrictions upon us, we would never strive to be better. Saturn can teach us ways that we may exist and enjoy life despite our personal limits. We may not be able to refute the choices we have made to be who we are, or the purpose that God gave us, depending on your personal beliefs. We are here for a reason, to be a specific person in a specific time period with lessons to learn and obstacles to overcome as a part of our journey. That does not mean we cannot personalize the archetype of Saturn to use it to our best advantage and to learn the lessons we must with as little heartache as necessary.

Pain and despair is a part of personal growth. If we didn't have some in our lives, we would be missing the whole human experience. Saturn acts like our inner father, reeling us in, grounding us, teaching us how to climb toward our goals. So, we access Saturn in our psyche by facing our limits outwardly and how to grow through them.
