How To Choose an Astrologer
If you are looking for someone to tell your future (e.g., will you get married, will you win the lottery, etc.) an astrologer will probably not be able to help you. There are Horary astrologers that deal with issues such as these, though the majority of astrologers do not practice this type of astrology. Even in the astrological community, the vote is still out as to whether this is a valid and ethical way to practice astrology. If you are looking to learn more about yourself, the direction of your life, your relationships with partners or parents, or related issues, a good astrologer can help you find objectivity. Once you have decided that it is an astrologer you are looking for, there are questions you can ask yourself about what you learn about the astrologer from speaking to them or from reading their advertisement. Are they compassionate? A good astrologer does not only have to know how to read a natal chart, they also have to be a good counselor and listener at heart. Astrology cannot tell you a million things about yourself without some input from you anymore than a good psychologist could. Do they have experience? This is of paramount importance. It takes literally years to learn to give an astrology session competently. Think of astrology as another language, and how long it takes to learn a whole new language. Then you have some idea what it really takes to learn it. Do they have either a certification in astrology or a degree in astrology, metaphysics, or related area? Though not a guarantee, it is a plus. There are some unscrupulous outfits that will certify or give a degree to anyone for a price. However, there are others that test the astrologer to find out their level of expertise. Keep in mind however, that just because someone can pass a test does not mean they can be personable enough to be an effective astrologer. Also, there are very competent astrologers who have no credentials. They may live in an isolated area where these things are not available to them, or they may not wish to be affiliated with a group for personal reasons. Feel free to express these concerns with your prospective choice. If they are honest, they will have no qualms discussing this with you.
