When we are asked, "What sign are you?", this pertains to the sign that the Sun was in at the time of birth. Sun Signs are the first thing that most of us learn about astrology, and due to the misconceptions surrounding the Sun Signs, sometimes they are the last.
A thinking person may say, "How can astrology be valid when one-twelfth of the population is obviously not the same?", and never look any further into the subject. The reality is, the Sun Sign is only one of many factors that make up the birth (or natal) chart. The birth chart is a map of the sky and the placements of the planets at the time and place of birth. All symbols of all planets and signs are present in everyone's birth chart. This means that you have a different sign for all areas of your life and personality. So, then, why the common emphasis on the sun, and what role does it play in astrology? The Sun The sun, in the birth chart will represent the psychological ego, or sense of self. While this is indeed important, we are obviously not all ego (though I will bet you know some people who seem that way....). How the ego is expressed astrologically will be modified by several different factors. The other planets in the chart, certain distances away from the sun, (called aspects) can interact and modify the symbol of the sun's sign. Also, the actual placement in the chart, (i.e. where the sun sits in the chart), will also factor into the modification of the symbol. The chart is made up of twelve sections, called houses. Each house represents an area of life. What house the sun sits in will show the areas of life the personal ego expresses itself the best. So, the placement, the interaction with other planets, and the sign that the sun is in will show an individuality to the ego that the sign alone will not indicate. Once we realize that the sun is not the be-all and end-all to astrology, it is easier to give it a chance, by studying before we judge. The different planets all have their own symbolism to take us much further into understanding others and ourselves beyond simply our ego states. The sun is only one of many of the misconceptions about astrology. Like many other subjects still under the blanket term "occult", there are still many sources of misinformation centered on the subject. This misinformation pushes individuals away from learning about the valuable insights studying astrology seriously can bring into one's life. There is some great information in the links provided, and I recommend anyone from the novice with interest to the advanced astrologer to take a look. Go To Page: 1
