Meteor Shower Prompts Reports of UFOs

It's a bird...it's a plane...no, it's a mass invasion of little green aliens riding on shooting stars.

It never fails. Every time there is a bright light in the night sky, people from all parts of the world seem to crawl out of the woodwork to report spotting a bonafide UFO. And it seems like mid-November was no exception.

What most of us know to be the annual Leonid meteor shower prompted calls to police and military officials in all four corners of the earth that a UFO invasion was underway. Sounds silly, doesn't it?

But consider the Afghan family on the move across the desert, fleeing from Taliban oppression and American B-52 bombers. Astronomy and it's cyclic waves of phenomena like meteor showers are not a part of the general knowledge of most tribesmen. What to us appeared to be a beautiful display of astronomical significance was a frightening experience for the uninformed.

Consider the Romanian farmer that gathered his family into an underground storm shelter in fear Armagedon had arrived.

Consider the Peruvian sheep herder that believed the Gods were demonstrating their power and might; issuing a visual promise that a triumphant return was about to transpire.

Consider, too, the Hindu master who watched the heavens atop the walls of his far-Eastern monastary convinced that ancient scrolls must contain a clue to the astronomical event and it's hidden meaning for our human species.

Call it ignornace, if you will. Call it superstition. Call it the overactive imagination of an ill-informed public. But be assured that when the historic Leonid storm struck the atmosphere as planet Earth journeyed through the meteor ring last weekend that more people in the world thought it was a message from God than those that knew it for what it was -- as hard as that may be to believe.

With as many as a thousand shooting stars an hour in the night sky last Saturday, the spectacle was indeed a sight to see; a sight to remember. But for the majority of the population of the world, it came as a surprise. The vast majority of the world's population, in fact, had no idea the meteor storm was scheduled. Most of those gave religious and spiritual significance to the event instead of accepting it as pure science.

Silly majority. Silly world. You would think they would know better. Is it ignornace versus intellect; religion and spirituality versus science? Come on -- we are the educated ones, right?
