Losing Your TwinIdentical twins seem to have an additional sense of loss in that their twin was their genetic "equal," so to speak. Not only did they share the same womb and environment growing up, they shared a common genetic wiring, psychology, and perhaps even a spiritual bond which is immeasurable. Hilda Taylor lost her identical twin, Helen, in January of 2000. "I think about her every day. No one knows the loss you have unless you're a multiple birth. People do not understand how great the bond between twins can be, not even other family members. It's been one and a half years since my sister died and I feel like half of me died that day. People call me by her name and people still ask me if I'm her children's mother. "Helen was my competition and since her death there's no 'fight' left. We would see each other everyday and she would always call early every morning. I still expect to receive her call. This bond we had developed within the womb and never goes away. I am a triplet but the third one is a boy. My sister and I were identical. "As children we could always sense when something was going to happen to the other one. On the day of her death, I sensed something was going to happen but I wasn't aware of the event. I had a bad feeling all day. "The emptiness in my heart cannot be explained. I've lost a father when I was 14, and I lost my first born son, but nothing compares to the loss of my twin sister." Both identical and fraternal twins and multiples who lost their twin/multiple sibling at birth or shortly thereafter report a feeling of "incompleteness." One person writes, "I lost my sister and brother at birth, (I'm the only one who made it through delivery) and although it was fourteen years ago and I never technically met them, I still ache for them to this day." Many twinless twins have created websites to honor and remember their twin. Many of these are beautifully if not painfully written.
