The Laws of Twindom: A Crash-Course
Do twins feel what the other one feels? It's possible, but as a Law of Twindom, no! How do twins tell each other apart? I've been asked this question many times and the answer depends upon the intention of the asker. If you mean to ask whether we ever confuse ourselves, then I am at a loss to answer because the question seems, well, ludicrous. If you want to know what the physical differences are in order to differentiate between us visually, of course that varies with each person/twin set. In my case, (if you really want to know!) my chin is a little longer (1/4 inch to be exact), my upper eyelids are a little more visible, and my left front tooth pokes out a little and her right front tooth does the same (as we are mirror twins). There are actually countless differences but I think you get the idea! Do twins share boyfriends/girlfriends? This question knocks the individuality right out of me! I can't believe anyone is serious to ask this, but if you must be told, the answer is no! If you want to know if we're attracted to the same person, I'm sure that varies with each person/twin set. In our case, the answer has always been no. I know of siblings who have dated the same person or siblings who have married into the same family. Twins have done it too. In fact, twins have married other twins! Certainly that's unique and not a Law of Twindom. To conclude, being a twin has been a gift for me. My sister and I are close and perhaps closer than most siblings since we do understand one other innately. In this column I hope to present other perspectives from twins and those living with and around them. Although I am a twin, I must admit that I have questions, too! And when I see little twins in the park with their mommies and daddies, I also do a double-take. Perhaps no one is immune to the fascination factor!
