My Problems with Plecos...Part I

My experiences with the Whiptail show this to be true as well. Though for some reason, perhaps the cover afforded by the leaves, they love to camp out at the base of the roots of my plants. While the Otocinclus will do a decent job of tidying things up in their little planted paradise, the Whiptail is not too effective at keeping the green away. The plecos I previously discussed are for the most part excellent at ridding your tank of algae, but with the caveat that for the most part they will eat up any decorative plant you put in their way. In the unplanted aquarium make sure you supplement your daily feeding with spirulina flake or pellet for your plecos. Blanched cucumber is also universally agreed upon as an excellent vegetable source for plecos, however it does seem to go ignored in my tanks. For digestive purposes, plecos are fond of rasping away at driftwood. Please have at least a piece of it in your tank if you plan to keep Plecos. Next time, we'll finish up with a brief talk on driftwood and some of my horrific first hand experiences with Plecos-and they're supposed to be easy!
