Silver Dollars: Part II: Keeping Them - Page 2© Clifford J. Aliperti Silver Dollars are perfect for many styles of tank. (Again though, not the planted community!). They are mild-mannered community residents and they are perfect dither fish for medium sized cichlids. As long as you’re not dealing with gigantic cichlids that can eat up your Silver Dollars or overly aggressive cichlids that will bully them to death, a school of these fish will help ease relations in the cichlid community tank and add its visual appeal as well. Cichlids need somewhere to vent their aggression, and in a tank composed of solely different species of cichlids they will often batter each other sometimes to death to establish a hierarchy. With a handful of Silver Dollars in the tank, they are generally distracted and the Silver Dollars are quick enough to keep themselves out of harm’s way as long as your tank is large enough. All in all, the Silver Dollar is an excellent fish for many set-ups, pleasing to the eye, and well deserving of its classic reputation.
