The Survival of the Native Species of Cichlids of Lake Victoria

Cichlids have been introduced to many places in the world, such as Florida and are surviving very nicely. In some cases, they are surpassing the local fish in repopulating. This proves that cichlids can survive if placed in waters where there are less predators and where they are not harvested for food. The governments in the countries surrounding Lake Victoria have done very little to preserve the native species and don't seem to be interested in ensuring the survival of these fish. In addition, many fish importers will pay top dollar to bring the native fish into pet stores around the world due to the demand for wild caught fish.

How can we help?

  • Buy fish that have been not been raised in the wild
  • Breed fish in order to perpetuate the species

I really would love for my grandkids and their kids to be able to see these wonderful fish. I'm sure you would too.
