Traveling with a Pet

* Bring a leash, preferably a retractable one, and attach it to your pet's collar before leaving your vehicle. Allow only adults or very trustworthy and reliable older children to be responsible for walking the dog, and make sure that "dog walks" and public areas are well-lit and nearby before walking the dog at night. * Be prepared for emergencies. Most of the first aid supplies you'll need for a pet's injury can come from your own first aid kit. Any medication the pet requires should be carried in a secure but convenient place. If you will be camping, be aware of ticks and mosquitoes that can pass disease to your pet as well as to humans. * When on the road, stop at least every two hours for a 'potty break' and so you and your pet can stretch legs. Don't feed him much (to reduce carsickness) during breaks, but let him drink as much as he wants. * Be especially grateful to those servers, housecleaning staff and proprietors who make your trip easier. Let them know you appreciate their willingness to accommodate you and your pet! Do some homework in advance: being prepared means you'll enjoy your trip and so will your pet. Have fun!
