Getting Around South Asia

There is really no national bus service in India. Most states, however, do have public bus services with routes that traverse the country. One possible way to arrange bus travel prior to your arrival in India is to take a look at the website of a public bus service in the state in which you will arrive. For example, in Rajastan, you could check out the site of Rajastan Roadways. The public bus services of other states can easily be found by conducting a quick search on the internet. Another possibility is to consult your guidebook. These often have detailed information on bus services across India. Many travellers simply wait until they arrive and then book their bus travel. This is especially easy in the big cities and you should rest assured that bus services are frequent and extensive across India.

For those with lots of money and little time, a flight pass might be a good option. The Visit India Pass Scheme has 3 available passes all of which allow for unlimited plane travel across India. You do need to plan carefully to reap the full benefits of your pass. It is really only worth the expense if you plan to visit many destinations spread across the country.

A brief word about car rental in India: don't do it. Not only are many roads in poor condition, but driving standards are appalling. Furthermore, if you do rent and happen to have an accident, you, as a foreigner, will most likely be deemed responsible.

India is an adventurer's paradise. I hope that the above links help you to enjoy it to the full.
