Working in India

India is huge--the size of some continents. A short visit to this fascinating land will probably leave you yearning for more. So, why not go back for a little longer and, instead of just being a tourist, work in the country? Doing so will give you a unique opportunity to thoroughly explore this culture and get to know its diverse people.

A good place to begin learning about India is at TravelIndia.Com. At this site you can find information about events and happenings in India. There are also a lot of links to adventure trips in India, mountain and island getaways, and city breaks.

Before you undertake any kind of work in India, do be sure that you have the necessary visa and documentation. You can find out about the current requirements at the Ministry of External Affairs site.

Those interested in social issues might like to check out The National Center for the Promotion of Employment for Disabled People. This organization tries to bring to the forefront an issue that is ignored by many government departments and businesses; the right of disabled people. If such areas interest you, it is certainly worth scanning through their website to find out about voluntary opportunities.

A variety of teaching opportunities exist in India. One organization that is well worth checking out is I-to-I. They offer a non-paid program through which you can teach English to locals. TEFL training is included and can even be done online. Take a look at their website for more information about fees and locations.

Another organization that is able to offer teaching positions is Africa and Asia Venture. Their projects are all located in Northern India. Volunteers will live in good but basic accommodation in the villages. They will be involved in the life of the village school. They will also teach English to low-level students.

A website to periodically take a look at is Internabroad. Their India program offers a range of internships including business placements, medical observation programs, and teaching English to medical students. Placements will be in Madurai - a French NGO business village.

Student Partnerships Worldwideis an international development charity working in Africa and Asia. They offer school-based education programs and community-based environment programs. Nationals of any country are eligible to take part in their programs. In India, the focus is on social programs. Full support is given to volunteers. Placements usually last between 3 and 4 months.
