Working in the USA

This will be the first of a number of pieces that focus on working in a particular country or region of the world. Some of the areas I will write about, I have lived and worked in. Some of the areas, I may have just travelled through or only know about through the experiences of others. If you have any comments or find that any of my information is out-of-date or incorrect, please contact me. Also, if you would like me to write about a particular area that you are thinking of adventuring in, let me know. I hope you enjoy the series. This week, I will write about USA.

There are simply hundreds of potential schemes that you could take advantage of in this land of opportunity. Here, I will review a few--organized by category.

HOMESTAYS

Homestays offer a good introduction to a country. They are ideal for those who have never been to that country before and want to gain an insight into its culture. If you are placed with a compatiable family, they can also be great fun. Learn more about becoming an exchange student at theCultural Homestay International's site. Their program includes a homestay combined with a volunteer internship program. You will be placed with an American business. You can choose between a couple of programs. A 10 week Short Term Enrichment Program (STEP) provides an introduction to North American work practices. For those who want a greater insight into the world of business in the USA, there is an Intensive Internship Program (IIP). This program provides an in-depth exploration into the overseas intern's selected career field.

WORK EXCHANGE

Those from the UK should check out this site provided by Fulbright Commision. The site provides links to the many work exchange schemes between the UK and the USA. In addition, there may be some useful links for nationals of other countries. There is also some relevant information about visas.

The Mountbatten Internship Programmewas founded in 1984. It serves to provide educational and business links between the USA, the United Kingdom, and Europe. Through the program, graduates and young professionals are able to gain practical experience in a New York business. Check out the site to find more about program fees and details.

Intrax Work offers seasonal jobs and career-oriented internships to international students who want to work in their field of study with companies in the USA. To meet the program requirements, you must be an international university student who is proficient in English. The program is a great way to spend your summer or winter break in the US traveling and gaining work experience.
