Work Overseas for Skilled Workers

Perhaps you are a well-qualified person;a doctor, teacher, or nurse. You want to go and travel for a while. However, backpacking, picking up work here and there, and taking out time from your career are not really for you. If this is the case, do not despair. There are options that you can pursue. In this article we will look at volunteer opportunities for skilled people. These are options that will allow you to travel without detrimental effects on your career.

A good starting point is with the organization Action Without Borders. On this site you can search by skill or by country. Your best bet is to click on the link for volunteering. Then, try a few searches. There are all kinds of positions listed here and they change daily. You could also try clicking on the link to organizations.

Do be aware that most skilled positions are in developing parts of the world. This is because there are often no locals with the required level of expertise. However, do not expect much, if any, pay. Working in the third world is something that people do for the experience and adventure involved, definitely not for the wallet.

One organization that has a wealth of opportunities for skilled workers is Voluntary Service Overseas. Their detailed and well-designed website contains links to positions for professionals in a diverse array of fields. Most of the work is in developing countries at the local level. VSO operates in almost 50 countries.

For more permanent and more lucrative positions, you might want to take a look at the United Nations homepage. Most UN departments employ professionals only. However, each year there are also entry positions available to nationals of various countries. You can check online to see if you are eligible for these entry positions. Positions at the UN will allow you to work from one of the 6 regional offices located around the globe.

There are many opportunities for professors overseas. One search strategy is to find out through your own department of openings in other countries. Alternatively, you could look online. First, check out Yahoo's list of universities by country. The level of qualifications required for teaching positions will vary. Countries such as the US, Australia, and those in Western Europe will probably require that you have a PhD in your field and are fluent in the local language. However, you can get work in a university without needing advanced degrees! If you are interested in teaching English at a university in Asia, for example, you can possibly get a job with just a bachelors degree in any field and some relevant experience. The best way to find these kinds of jobs is to go into a search engine such as The Digital Education Network
