Australia is a vast (the world’s 6th largest) and diverse country. It is an under-populated land that includes great cities and vast wildernesses. Perhaps its image as a land of freedom and adventure is what attracts so many tourists. Australia has much to offer its many visitors. You will marvel at icons such as the famous Sydney Opera House; you can relax on the fantastic beaches (if you are a surfer, you will be in heaven); you can go diving in the blue waters of the world-famous Great Barrier Reef; and you can visit awesome natural wonders, such as Ayers Rock. For more information on Australia, check out the Rough Guide and Lonely Planet sites. The YAHOO guide to Australia is also a useful information source. It includes details on Australia’s major attractions, facts about the country, and historical links.
If you are anything like myself, It is unlikely that a few weeks vacation in Australia will satisfy. It will merely whet your appetite for more. Fortunately, for those who want to stay longer, Australia offers a wealth of voluntary opportunities. Most of the available placements center around the environment and conservation work. If you like the great outdoors, you are in for a fantastic time! Australia is blessed with a distinctive and fascinating mix of native flora and fauna. Many of the creatures, such as the kangaroo and the kookaburra, are unique to this part of the world. For those who are interested in conservation work, an organization worth taking a look at is The Australian Trust for Conservation Volunteers. ATCV volunteers can choose in which Australian territory they would like to be based and how long they would like to take part in the program for. Weekdays are spent doing conservation work. Weekends are usually spent in guest-houses or youth hostels in the larger cities. Another organization that involves work with nature is Green Volunteers At their site, one can find opportunities all over the world. A large number of placements, however, are available in Australia and New Zealand. Follow the links to Australasian placements by clicking on the Union Jack flag. How would you like to volunteer at the zoo? Friends of the Zoos provide information about voluntary opportunities at 3 of Victoria’s greatest zoos-- Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary and Victoria's Open Range Zoo at Werribee. Volunteer opportunities are primarily for students. Activities involve research-related tasks such as data collation, analysis and report writing. There are also field projects such as grassland restoration, small mammal trapping, general fauna surveys and assistance with laboratory projects.
