At one time the town had a gathering place for all the churchgoers. They would meet once a year in a huge meadow south of Plainfield for the annual Old Settlers Picnic; a much loved day of music and old fashioned games and revival preaching. Everyone came, bringing their food and family in their wagons and buggies. This tradition continued for many years before the advent of television. Some efforts have been made from time to time to revive this charming tradition, but it doesn't go now like it did then. Young people have a considerably more interesting choice of things to do than they had then. Church functions for our grandparents were an opportunity for people to socialize with one another, forget their cares and chores for a day and be light hearted and carefree for at least that one day in the year. Those days are gone and churches are no longer the the main hub of social activities they once were.

One of the things that Plainfield sports now besides all their beautiful city parks, (Swinford, Franklin, Hummel, and Friendship Gardens, with baseball diamonds and soccer fields) is the new Splash Island Water Park. It is fabulous! Swimming pools are inside and outside, with water slides and all manner of fun things for enjoying the water. It is drawing families from miles around the area. The indoor pool is featuring water aerobics for the older set of swimmers for therapeutic arthritis exercises. Classes are filling up fast.

We have many restaurants and many new motels all at the intersection of I-70 and State Road 267 or the Plainfield-Mooresville exit.. The choices of Bob Evans, The Coachman, Hog Heaven Barbecue, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Arby's, Steak and Shake, White Castle ("the most unique hamburgers in the world") and The Golden Corral, are but a few names. Further into the town north on 267 you will find modern shopping centers with new additions being built even as I type this. A modern cinema multi-plex is going in now, with a number of individual theaters inside one building to view the movie of your choice.

We are just ten minutes west of Indianapolis International Airport where a new terminal is being built that will be even closer to Plainfield for visitors and residents than the old one.

Plainfield is a progressive and burgeoning city. Its beautiful newly remodeled library in Simmons Street acts as a cultural center for the town, with many meeting rooms and programs for a wide variety of interests. Artwork by High School artists is often on display and something interesting is always there on exhibition.
