Hello fellow travelers! Hoosier Hannah is putting out an "Extra" in her column for all you travelers who love to go to Festivals!
I just learned of a huge Festival in Indiana, coming up in Marion, Indiana, on Highway 9, in the northeast part of the state; the birthplace of one of our favorite sons, James Dean. Major Highway I-69 which passes close to Marion has a good number of motels for visitors who cannot find rooms in Marion and Fairmount. For years the little town of Fairmount has marked the anniversary of Dean's death in the month of September when he died in an automobile crash at the age of twenty-four. Fairmount is where Dean grew up on his aunt and uncle's farm and graduated from high school, but Marion, Indiana in Grant County is where Dean was born. This year, for the 50th Anniversary of Dean's death, the commemoration will run all year long. A special commemoration will begin in Marion, Indiana on June 3-5, 2005. Some of the people of Fairmount, where the James Dean Museum is located, and where the actor is buried in the local cemetery, will view this Festival as an encroachment on their own festival on September 22nd through the 25th. But others in Fairmount believe that the Marion event will bring people to Fairmount as well, to visit the cemetery and the official James Dean Museum. The Festival in Marion, will include a film fest of digitally restored James Dean movies and will debut the "world's largest drive-in, with a 100 foot outdoor screen which will show digitally re-mastered James Dean movies; East of Eden, Rebel Without A Cause, and Giant. Actors Martin Sheen and Dennis Hopper will be there to do special presentations before the viewing of Dean's films. Other notables who will be there for the festival are The 5th Dimension, Gary Puckett, The Little River Band, Herman's Hermits--all will be in concert! There will be a Car and Motorcade show and a replica of Dean's Porsche 550 Spyder, which will be driven by NASCAR driver Tony Stewart as part of the NASCAR Busch Series. Stewart will also attend the event. If you miss this festival in Marion, because of the short notice, remember the festival in Fairmount to commemorate the death of James Dean, will last all year long this year and the main festival will be held Sept. 22-25. Restaurants in Marion, include: Chi Chi's; Bob Evans; Applebee's; KFC; Arby's; Burger King; and Long John Silvers; mostly fast food type restaurants.
