Major Festival Events on the Irish Calendar: July to October

© Irene Togher

It's difficult to beat a festival for a glimpse into Irish culture and especially into Irish fun. From traditional Irish music to street parades and from Irish oysters to soaring opera, the Irish calendar is packed with internationally recognized festivals and local street fests alike.

Pinpointing just a few of the major festivals, there are some good ones on offer from July to October that draw international participants and visitors in the thousands.

Galway Arts Festival

July 16 sees the opening of this year's Galway Arts Festival. Always vibrant and colorful, this festival has grown over the years into a recognized venue for artistic talent in the forms of theatre, dance, music and literature. Street entertainment brings the city alive until July 23 and visitors can enjoy a huge selection of events like art displays, music concerts, poetry recitals and so on.

Rose of Tralee International Festival

Not only has the Rose of Tralee blossomed into an international festival but it has become a major TV event too. Loosely following the Miss. World formula, the search for a Tralee Rose attracts competitors from all over the world. Outside on the streets this small southern town is awash with entertainment in the form of concerts and street performers.

Wexford Opera Festival

Ireland may not be considered the home of opera but for three weeks in October Wexford becomes a Mecca for the opera lover who can enjoy full scale productions of the very best operas as well as more intimate recitals. You might also attend choral concerts, late night cabaret and all sorts of recitals.

Guinness Cork Jazz Festival

Cork comes alive to the sound of soulful blues and scintillating jazz from 25 October to 28 October. Both Irish and international musicians delight jazz fans with music concerts and street entertainment in a festival that is all informality and fun.
