Step Back to a Pre-Celtic Time of Spiritual Mystery at Newgrange

Even more amazing than its physical structure however, is its perfect alignment with the horizon. The people who built Newgrange must have had a superior knowledge of astronomy and the Earth’s position in relation to the sun. During the few days around the winter solstice of the 21st December, a shaft of light shines through the roof box located over the entrance, down the passage and illuminates the chamber within. Throughout the rest of the year the chamber remains in perfect darkness. Unfortunately, you can forget about being inside the chamber for this wonderful event, as there is a 25-year waiting list for the privilege and that list has been temporarily closed. However, visitors can witness an electrically simulated sunrise from inside the chamber.

Unfortunately, our detailed knowledge of the physical structure of Newgrange is not matched with any great knowledge of the people who built it. When we leave this place we are left with many questions. For what exact reason did they build such a magnificent tumulus? Why were they willing to begin a project they would not live to see finished? Did they revere some people in their society so highly that they felt they deserved this amazing tomb? Were there particular burial rites performed here? Did they worship Gods at Newgrange? Why and how these people put so much time and superhuman effort into building such an awe-inspiring structure can only remain speculation for us today. But one thing is certain – everyone can walk away from Newgrange holding onto the air of mystery and spirituality that surrounds Bru Na Boinne.
