Accommodation Choices

The Castle
There's something very appealing about staying in a castle. It could be the sense of history or the opulent luxury, the resident ghost or the beautiful surroundings. Whatever your reason, a stay in an Irish castle hotel is one to treasure. Ireland offers a vast selection of castles as tourist accommodation some dating back to the 1000s and all refurbished to the best standard. Keep especially in mind Dromoland, Ashford and Waterford Castles and Adare Manor.

The Hotel
There is a range of hotels on offer, from the very expensive, larger hotel to the smaller, family run hotel. All offer excellent standard accommodation and the nightly price will almost always include breakfast. What you pay will depend on how many services and extras you require. Some of the best larger chains include Jury's and the Great Southern Hotels.

The Guesthouse
While generally considered a step below the hotel, guesthouses can, in fact, be just as nice as many of the hotels. Room price will include a full Irish breakfast and most of the guesthouses will have a restaurant where you can get your evening meal. This type of accommodation ranges from farmhouses in the countryside to luxury town houses and can offer a more personal touch than a hotel.

The Bed & Breakfast

By far the most popular of Irish accommodation choices, the B&B offers good quality accommodation in people's specially adapted homes. There is great personal service and is usually good value with room and full breakfast included in the price. And the good news is that they are EVERYWHERE! You'll have no problem finding a nice B&B. Keep in mind though that all rooms may not be en suite, so if you want en suite make sure you ask specifically for that.

The Self Catering Option

Self catering accommodation can range from a luxury, romantic cottage in the countryside (see: Country Elegance and Comfort at The Gate Lodge, Clonleason for an example), to a log cabin for fishermen, to a city apartment. Prices will usually be quoted on a weekly basis and it will be up to you to look after yourself. This option can work out quite reasonable for a few people sharing.

. . .know where to stay next time I am in Eire.

Really is a handy list, which I shall refer to when my wife and I visit Ireland which may not be too far in the future at all.

Best wishes,
Tom ...
