A Monster of a Learning Portal

What is green and purple and has big, sharp teeth and a horn on its nose?

If you've been to Monster.com, you've seen the dragon-like creature that has become its trademark. Now Monster.com has spawned another site: MonsterLearning.com. This relatively new learning portal is mainly a search engine for finding online and offline learning products and services marketed by third party providers.

Start your engines

If you're unfamiliar with search engines, click Get Started on the home page for an overview of the site's features. While this information is helpful, the question and answer format along with the didactic tone seems to give the impression that anyone who has never used a search engine needs reassurance. Here's an example of what I mean. "Using keywords in your MonsterLearning search uses Boolean Logic. But don't worry, there is no need to panic. Follow these helpful tips to create a powerful search and find the exact learning opportunities you are looking for."

I think yelling 'Monster' in a crowded theater would cause more panic than shouting 'Boolean Logic'. However, Get Started does cover the basics well.

MonsterLearning.com users can choose the QuickSearch or the Advanced Search. In QuickSearch, simply enter a keyword and the program searches for its occurrence in the course title or the description and displays selections.

Advanced Search allows you to choose search criteria to browse selections. Use the Search All Learning option if you want to search an extensive selection of learning offerings from various providers. Here are the criteria you can choose from:

  • Keywords and/or subject category
  • Delivery method
  • Learning Type(s)
  • Provider(s)
  • Accredited provider(s) only

The All Learning option covers everything from classroom and online courses to conferences and seminars, test preparations, and assessments/certifications.

Use the Search by Location option if you are interested in finding classroom instruction, conferences and seminars. The criteria include:

  • Search Courses Earning Credit Only
  • Search by Location
  • Start Date
  • Price Less Than

The Advanced Search offers tips on keyword searching, FAQs, a glossary, and categories of subjects.

    Sample search

For my search, I selected the following criteria:

  • Keywords: project management
  • Delivery Method: online
  • Learning Types: course, assessments

I received 71 records listed in order of relevance to my search, with the most relevant at the top of the list. The list provided the following information for each record.

  • Course Title
  • Delivery Method
  • Type
  • Provider
  • Accredited
  • Price

If you are seeking information about a course from a particular provider, you can limit your search. For example, I wanted just those courses offered by SkillSoft so I refined my search by selecting SkillSoft from the Provider Index. I received 30 hits.
