As a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine I found acupuncture and massage in particular to be extremely effective in most cases of lower back pain. Even in chronic, degenerative spinal conditions which obviously can't be reversed, TCM techniques can at least help to manage the pain and improve the patient's quality of life.

Unfortunately many people in the West only try TCM therapies like acupuncture as a last resort when all else has failed. With its popularity rapidly growing in Western countries though it is only a matter of time before TCM becomes a primary choice in the treatment of back pain and other day-to-day, usually non-serious complaints. Just as it's been, and continues to be, in China for thousands of years.
