Continued from Part II.....

At that point Wendy brought up the issue of rent abatement - Mr. Jarlson had verbally agreed to give her the last month's rent free because of building conditions. For the first time, he turned his eyes on Wendy and opened them as if in surprise and outrage. Mr. Jarlson denied that he had ever made this offer and said that this would have been something that he would have offered to people who moved out early. Wendy reiterated that the agreement was not contingent on early move out, but due to reduced security, cleanliness, utilities, and inconvenience since they took over ownership. Again, he denied that this was the case.

Wendy then suggested that they would settle for a half a month's rent. Mr. Jarlson said that he was not authorized to make this decision. She asked him who would be authorized to do this - he said his brother Nick Jarlson, the owner and president of MarrietValley, would be able to authorize this. She then asked him when it would be possible to meet with Nick Jarlson and he responded that it would be virtually impossible, since his brother was a very busy man and had many projects going on all over the country.

When asked how they could make such a request. Parker Jarlson replied that the couple could certainly write a letter to his brother requesting that amount, but that he didn't think anything would come of it.

Richard had by this time rested his elbows on the table and was continuing his study of the surface with head in hands.

Wendy then said that she would prefer that they be able to pin down all of the points - move out date, living issues, rent abatement - at the same time so that they didn't have all these pieces of information floating around that could lead to further miscommunications. Wouldn't Mr. Jarlson be so kind as to facilitate this request for them?

Pursing his lips, Mr. Jarlson then said, "So are you saying that there are strings attached? Are you saying that unless we give you a half month's rent, you won't move out until the end of November?"

Wendy said that was not what she was saying, but that she wanted to make sure that everything was taken care of all at once. She said they were still in the process of talking to their new landlord, but would certainly like to be out of MarrietValley by the 31st of October.
