Have A Happy Hobbit Holiday

to celebrate the day Merry first blew the horn in the Shire (at Bywater, when he and his companions roused the Shire against Saruman's ruffians). Hobbits thus had no religious festivals, but like the Jews they came to celebrate significant events in their history with a dedication and fervor that was very Hobbit-like. Shire-holidays would eventually have been forgotten, however, as Men moved in and Hobbits moved on (or into hiding). The old histories were lost and the traditions and customs would have fallen away. But a good Hobbit-like celebration of the oncoming of Winter and the start of a new year can easily coincide with Christmas, and perhaps they are out there somewhere, feasting away in warm little holes, toasting the holidays in whatever form they find them, just happy to be Hobbits and alive and able to celebrate at all. Happy Hobbit Holidays, to everyone.
