Would Sandra Bullock be a good Mrs. Isildur? - Page 4© Michael Martinez
From Osgiliath Isildur set sail with his wife and sons. They passed down the Anduin and out to sea and ventured north along Middle-earth's coast, probably to the river Gwathlo. They would have turned inland and sailed up to the city of Tharbad, which was Elendil's chief port. From Tharbad Isildur would have passed north to the city of Annuminas by Nenuial, Lake Evendim. The whole family went along. But from there events are fuzzy. Anarion stayed in Gondor to lead the defense, and his son Meneldil seems to have remained behind as well.
But Elendil took counsel with Gil-galad, High King of the Elves of the West. Gil-galad lived in Lindon, the land to the west of Arnor. Did Elendil and Isildur ride to Lindon, or did Gil-galad answer a summons from the Dunedain? I suspect Elendil took his son to see the Elves, and from there Gil-galad must have sent out messengers to the other Elven kings, Oropher and Amdir, and perhaps to the King of Khazad-dum, whom many people believe to be Durin IV. Elendil and Gil-galad formed the Last Alliance of Elves and Men at this time, and it appears the Elves now revealed to the Dunedian the causes of the war which had come upon them so unexpectedly.
It took a year for Elendil and Gil-galad to get their peoples moving. They formed their alliance in the year 3430 but it wasn't until 3431 that Elendil mustered his army at Weathertop and waited for Gil-galad to come marching out of the west. From there they passed east to Imladris, Elrond's refuge in the western valleys of the Misty Mountains. For three years the armies trained and prepared themselves for war. Mrs. Isildur accompanied her husband to Imladris but went no farther.
Sometime before Isildur narched to war in the south he and Mrs. Isildur had a fourth son in Imladris, Valandil. This may have been an unusual event because the Numenoreans, being long-lived, emulated the Elves in many ways. One of the Eldarin customs was to forgo the begetting of children in time of war, and it seems strange the Dunedain would start making babies on the eve of war, especially given the fact that the Isildurs already had three fully grown sons.
Isildur was now more than 200 years old. His wife was presumably of a similar age, though probably somewhat younger. Elendur, their eldest son, was about 139 years old, old enough to have wed but he was still unmarried. His brothers Aratan and Ciryon were 112 and 72 years old at this time. Aratan should have been of a marrying age, but Ciryon was still a little young by Numenorean standards. It seems odd that the two older boys hadn't found wives. Was Mrs. Isildur perhaps responsible for that?
