Frodo's Temptation; Aragorn's Resistance

May 25, 2004 - © Douglas Charles Rapier

It would have been from his wardship to Elrond in Imladris, Haven of Vilya, the Ring of Sapphire, mightiest of the Three Elven Rings of Power that Estel/Aragorn would have learned of the ever-threatening Evil of Sauron and the perfidious power of the One Ring. He would have learned that it had been Sauron who had corrupted the Men of Numenor and fomented their rebellion against the Valar, which ended in the destruction of the Kingdom and the Change of the World when the Blessed Realm and Tol Eressea were removed from the world. He would have learned that Sauron was the enemy of all peoples and as the lieutenant of Morgoth, had killed the first teacher of Men, Finrod, and brought about the death of Barahir, Aragorn's distant ancestor. It would have been there, in the House of Elrond, that young Estel would have heard the tales of the creation of Arda, of the Valar, of the Great Journey, of the Two Trees of Valinor, of the Rape of the Silmarils, the unholy oath of Feanor and his sons, The Kin-slaying, the Wars of Beleriand, the Fall of Gondolin, of the tale of Beren and Luthien, of the Peredhil: Dior, Elwing and Earendil, the Half-Elven from whom descended the brothers Elrond and Elros and through long ages, Aragorn himself.

For at the age of twenty, Lord Elrond revealed to Estel that he was, in fact, Aragorn II, son of Arathorn II, heir to the thrones of Gondor and Arnor, the Chieftain of the Dunedain of the North and that in him lay the hope of man and Middle-earth. He was presented with the Ring of Barahir, the same ring made in Valinor, the Blessed Realm by the most skillful Noldor craftsmen and given by Finrod Felagund as a pledge to the First House of the Edain after Barahir had saved the Elf-King's live during the Dagor Bragollach, the fourth battle of the Wars of the Great Jewels. The same ring which Beren, Barahir's son, wore as proof that he was an Elf-friend when arraigned at the Courts of Thingol and Melian in Menegroth. Elrond also presented the young Chieftain with the Shards of Narsil, the sword of Elendil with which Isildur had cut the One Ring from the hand of Sauron. The Scepter of Annuminas, the silver rod which was the symbol of authority for the Lords of Andunie, the Faithful
