Toddler Discipline Part Two-Consequences

Give your children opportunities to work through these problems on their own. If your children are fighting over a toy give them an Either/Or statement like “Either you figure out a way to share or I will take the toy away.” Offer your help, “Do you need me to help you figure out how to share?” And give ideas, “You can use the egg timer to tell when your turn is over” or use a distraction, “Julie, here is a baby doll for you to play with.” If the children still cannot figure out how to share then follow through with your consequence of taking the toy away.

Remember to keep all of your wording age appropriate. For toddlers, be sure to use short sentences to go along with their short attention span!

Implementing consequences, like positive wording, takes A LOT of practice and patience. I would love to hear from you all on how these techniques are working (or NOT working!) in your home. Please send me an email to charcunning@suite101.com with your responses and/or suggestions.
