Turn Your Toddler Into A Bookworm

© Charlene Cunningham

It's never too late to introduce books and the love of reading to your children. Toddlers are an exceptionally fun age group to read to because of the way they interact with the reading process. They love to turn the pages, look at bright, colorful pictures and listen to the same stories over and over again. Board books are recommended for toddlers because the thick pages make turning them easier and ripping them next to impossible! Some great ideas to look for when picking out books are those that introduce ABC's, those with pop-up figures, simple wordings, silly noises, and those with repetitive sounds and words. These are my recommendations for the best books to buy for your toddler. My daughter really loves these stories and I usually have to read each one at least twice before moving on to the next one! All of these books are available for purchase at http://www.amazon.com

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
By Bill Martin Illustrated by Eric Carle
http://www.eric-carle.com
The illustrations in this book are very bright and eye-catching for all ages. The wording is very simple and repetitious and helps children learn animals and colors. Check out the link above to peek at some examples of his artwork and details about his new book Does A Kangaroo Have A Mother, Too?

Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?
By Dr.Seuss
Your toddler will sure giggle at all of the buzzing, hooting, mooing you'll be doing while reading this book! I have noticed that the Dr. Seuss books in board book form are written differently than the paper-paged books. The board books keep the same illustrations but the wording is much simpler for young children. There are also a fewer number of pages. Go, Dog, Go in board-book form is another great book by Seuss. Keep your eye out for other titles with 'Bright and Early Board Books' on the cover.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
By John Archambault and Bill Martin, Jr.
This book is a wonderful way to introduce the alphabet. It has very colorful pictures and a great singsong rhythm that toddlers love!

Guess How Much I Love You
By Sam McBratney
I must admit that this is more my favorite story than my daughter's. It's a sweet story about a little bunny trying so hard to describe to his daddy how much he loves him. (This would make a great present for Father's Day!)

Opposites
By Sandra Boynton
If you don't own any Sandra Boynton books yet, go get some! She is an excellent illustrator and her books are so easy for little children to relate to and understand. I have to read this book about 5 times a night! Some other toddler-friendly titles are Doggies, Barnyard Dance and A to Z. Toddlers will also find the book Blue Hat, Green Hat hysterical.
