As we drove around in my paid off but, damaged out Buick, our three kids packed in their carseats in the back, each kid rolled their eyes with each stop. They were crammed in more than usual in our car filled with treasures, and after shoving the couch in the trunk, and tying it shut with a piece of rope, our oldest daughter said,
"Please Mom, no more shopping for you!" We drove the couple blocks uncomfortable as usual after my "shopping", and I unloaded the car with my empty wallet I had set out with. How is this possible? Let me tell you, you too, can soon shop without cash.
*Note: Please remember to check with your local laws to be certain exactly what is permitted in your area.
The Art...
It's true, at one time I would have never considered going after curbside treasures, however the truth be told, we throw out a lot of things that to someone could be useful and a blessing.
The Possibilities... Here are some of the finds I have had in my home in the past, and/or currently that we got because someone was just throwing them away...
- An expensive wooden swing set for our kids complete with a big yellow slide, tire swing, sandbox and playhouse.
- End tables
- Dressers
- Firewood
- Shelves (already assembled)
- Plants
- Books
- Earrings
- An expensive art easel for the kids (dry erase on one side, chalk on the other)
- A complete twin bed frame
- Pictures/picture frames
- Computer Equipment
- Clothes
- Chairs
- Tables
- Couches/chairs
- Storage containers
- Little Tykes Play Kitchen
- Mirrors
- Other Misc. Toys and kid stuff
- Pots, Pans and Dishes
How is this possible?
There are always going to be people who upgrade and out-do, those that want to get rid of things because of bad memories, because they don't see the potential or do not have the time.
This is not an outrageous concept, I am not talking about re-constructing the Alamo with old tires (although I bet some kids would have the time of their lives playing there). It is a fact, that everyday someone somewhere is throwing out something that could be used in some way.
What to do about it? If you see anything that you think you could use, or someone else could use, don't be afraid to haul it home. Or call the appropriate people to help you get it where it needs to go.
Do You Mean Digging Through Garbage Bags, Cans, and Dumpsters? Personally, I do not get that involved, there are plenty of wonderful useful treasures just waiting for me patiently out of the dumpsters, cans and bags, waving at me in full view as I drive by. Some people do get that involved, however, I have not been that in need, nor that brave as of yet.
