A Cup of Tightwad Cocoa for the Soul

It's funny to me when I think about how much we really lose ourselves to the materialism of Christmas.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid.

Jesus was our first Christmas gift, and best one we will ever have. He leaves us with PEACE. The world tells us that we need to buy, buy, and buy. Hurry and trample and get what we want and need and spend all we have. This is not it at all.

It would be frightening to think what it would have been like if instead of God giving us His son, and Himself, if he gave us the latest X-Box or Tickle-Me-Elmo. That instead of His peace and His love, he ran around looking for the next material thing to entertain us for a short while and lose heart when we lose interest, or do not approve.

My heart before today was so troubled, myself so afraid. I think the modern day revival of "A Christmas Carol", should instead be where the average uptight individual goes to a nursing home, hospital or shelter for the night, gives to them freely, and walks away changed. How can I be so caught up in what I am doing, what I am buying, what I have, what I don't, what they think; when I could be somewhere immobile caught between the unrest of the mind and the ability of the body or vice versa, and put neatly away like last year's presents and forgotten about?

Today I am going to try to covet peace, and throw out the trouble of getting and doing all and the fear of not being accepted, and keep this spirit of Christmas.

If my experience ceased to warm you, I pray that the cocoa and a Christmas cookie will.
