Untying Gift Buying


  • No matter what, if you are like me, you are always going to give something to someone, that although you had the best of intentions they are not going to see them. In addition you are likely to receive something from someone that shows that they were just trying to get the job done, and didn't really care what they gave. All I can offer you is the opportunity instead to rejoice in what you see that others adore, and what you know that others tried so hard with.
  • Please remember that even if you do know every little want of each of your children, and even if you can afford to buy it for them. Consider asking them to prioritize by picking five things that they want most of all, above anything else, (in case Santa doesn't have a lot of room in sleigh). This way you can know what to buy straight away before toy stores sell out of them (if they haven't already), and you know what is the most wanted. This also gives little ones a sense of control and appreciation. They are more likely to remember the Christmas where they planned and graciously received the five things they wanted so badly, than the 20 things they simply said they wanted after seeing a commercial.

    In our world of excess and commercialism we all know that the little "marketing" elves work year round developing more and more disposable toys for the disposable interest, and that with this demand, gifts are going to continually have less and less intrinsic value. If you can find the time and the energy, consider making something for your kids. "Etch-a-Sketch", and "Light Brights" are only used for a short amount of time in the span of childhood, but a quilt that you make, can be cherished forever.

    Things you can make in no time at all...

    Cookies in a jar...

    Add one very inexpensive (I got a whole bunch for .50 each a bit ago) cake mix to a decorative and/or canning jar. Layer this with up to ½ c. choc. Chips, raisons, crushed candy bars, etc. and put a piece of decorative material, ribbon and/or raffia on to top it off. Attach this recipe to the jar...

    Add jar contents and 2 eggs, 1/3 c. oil, place teaspoons on cookie sheet and bake in a pre-heated
