Tango Through the Tightwad Trees....

It all began a few years ago; we packed the kids up, and set up with the ‘fam’ in a wilderness away from home. Since that time it has become our “annual”, or “semi-annual,” extended family summer get-together. Our family enjoys camping and it can be done very cheaply. Although last weekend’s adventure was free (Thanks mom and dad-in-law), join me in planning our immediate family’s upcoming camping excursion. First and Foremost: Determine where, when, how and how much? Are you going to go “backpack” camping, “tent” camping, or “camper” camping? Are you going to go in the backyard, on a friend, family, or neighbor’s land or are you going to a National or State Park, or other pay campground? When are you going? Are you going to completely wing it and set off tonight or tomorrow night, or are you planning one week or more in advance? Is it free or how much is it going to cost you to camp there? The answers to these questions can greatly influence how exactly you may want to “tightwad” it. National and state parks require stickers, so when planning this way, be sure to figure this expense, if you do not already have one. If you are from the “states” or would like to venture here, you can check out the website http://www.stateparks.org Here you can find info on individual parks by state, complete with a map and activities (e.g. swimming, hiking trails, boating, skiing, etc.). A like and more elaborate website is; http://www.nps.org this site covers information regarding National park info as well as camping accommodations. How: While some people who camp often and for extended lengths of time, may choose to go by camper, the cheapest and most straightforward method may be by tent, and sleeping bag. There are many options to think of in any case, if you are acquiring your equipment for the first time, or are considering upgrading. Do you prefer dome or standard tent? There are tents that are more than one room; there are tents that are screened all the way around, ones with great height that you are able to stand up in. Some are easy to pack up and erect, that makes them ideal for backpackers. Best prices for tents can be obtained during the very early spring (March/April/May) and the very end of summer (August/September/October). Tents can last indefinitely if taken care of. Be sure to waterproof yearly and, patch holes promptly. Never pack up gear that’s wet for very long.
