Poor or Cheap, There's a Place For You...©
Aug 7, 2001
Some fanciful grown men choose to sing their praises to a place called the YMCA. A few other ladies, delight in serenade to downtown. Some middle-aged beach men still reminisce in remembrance of several different places in California. Still I choose a different destination. A free one at that: The Library. When in search of sad or scary,
Curly, Shep, Moe and Larry,
When you’re poor or when you’re bored,
There is one place you can afford…
Some have coffee, some serve tea
Either way come browse for free
Whenever open, night or day…
Come for the all you can know buffet.
There’s not a place I’d rather be,
Come “Tightwad’s” to the Library! Are you getting all you can from your local library?
- Books: When looking for a new book try it on first to make sure it fits you all right. If your library doesn’t carry what you’re looking for try borrowing via an inter-library loan, or suggest that it be put on your library’s list of books to get. If it’s checked out, be sure that you reserve it for when it comes back in. To get some ideas on what books to read you can always check out books via Internet bookstores or your favorite frugal local bookstore. When journeying to these sites and stores please remember to resist temptation and opt to borrow these books first from the library. Take a pen and paper and jot down these titles, and then simply look them up at your next visit to the library.
- Music: Whether looking for the dulcet musical relaxation for an upcoming car trip, or something for the kids that you hope will tire them before the time to return, you can find it at the library. Many libraries have a vast collection of CD’s, tapes and if you’re eclectic like I am, you may even head for the record section.
- CD-ROMs: Find computer programs for the whole family, and the price is oh so right.
- Songbooks:If you are adept or just learning an instrument, some libraries have various song/music books available for loan. If you’re extremely talented, you can memorize the songs before the due date approaches.
- Videos:Cheaper than any rental store, and still with a great selection. Why skimp on entertainment, after all can’t you afford it?
- Filmstrips, Books on Tape, Sing/Read Along: Free, Free, Free!
- Games, Toys, and other Learning Tools: Kids outgrow and lose interest so quickly, did you know that you may never need to buy new? I have friends without kids who when entertaining little nieces and nephews they pick out age appropriate toys from the library. They’re free, and they don’t clutter up your house, since you can take them back. Then the next time you have your visitors back, you can impress them with an all-new collection of borrowed toys.
