The impetuous Anne immediately fell for the handsome young sailor, her present relationship with Calico Jack notwithstanding, and conspired to find herself alone with him to profess her love. Managing to secure a watch together, Anne revealed her secret identity to the young Dutch sailor. The sailor then revealed his own secret. He was not Dutch nor a man, "he" was a twenty-seven year old Englishwoman named Mary Read! Like Anne Bonny, Mary Read was pretending to be an ordinary sailor while on the Dutch ship; so the two quickly became fast friends. In the weeks that followed each maintained their disguises - Anne even keeping Mary's secret from Calico Jack - as regular sailors, fighting and swearing with the best of them.

Anne and Mary's friendship soon aroused Calico Jack's suspicions. He noticed the Anne spending more and more time together with the handsome young Dutch sailor he had taken. Calico convinced himself that Anne was cheating on him and confronted them one night as they were relaxing. In a fit of jealousy, Calico threatened to kill the young "man," so Anne was forced to reveal Mary's identity. The situation now defused, Calico went along with Mary's ruse. The fate's, however, had a different idea. Mary soon fell in love with a young English sailor in Rackam's crew named Tom Deane. Deane was not a natural pirate, he was pressed into service when Calico Jack captured his ship off Jamaica. Mary revealed herself to Tom and the two became lovers. Some time later, Deane foolishly became embroiled in an argument with a fellow crewmen. Following pirate law, the argument was to be settled by a duel onshore at the first opportunity. Mary realized that Tom stood no chance against the hardened pirate, so she provoked her own fight with the cutthroat and managed to have her duel scheduled before Tom's. At the earliest opportunity, Mary and her enemy were taken to an uninhabited island to settle their quarrel. Following strict pirate protocol, the two faced off with pistols - and missed. They then went with the cutlass. Mary, realizing that Tom's, as well as her, life hung in the balanced, fought desperately. Her years of fighting paid off as the man dropped his guard and Mary ran him threw. After her victory, Mary and Anne discarded their disguises and donned female clothing, though they continued to function as members of the crew and took part in all the ship's fights. In some accounts they are described as "dressed in men's jackets and long trousers, and handkerchiefs tied about their heads."
