Do you ever feel guilty when you turn the TV on and the phone off? Can you, in good conscience, abandon your to-do list for a time of not-doing? It's as if we simply must be available for those oh-so-intrusive telemarketers. As if we must stay in production, as if we'll lose our edge if we let up for a moment or two.
And in the mean time, our marriages suffer. Jesus said a lone time ago that you can't serve two masters. Suppose those two master were your marriage and your work...what would you do?
We have lots of pointless holidays here in America. So many I won't even attempt to list them. But how about a new one... "National Time-Out for Marriage Day". We'd hold this particular holiday once a week...or once a month at the minimum.
During this time, we'd be constrained to focus not on the other thing, but on our marriages...time to gaze into those once-familar eyes, listen to that once-familiar voice. Reconnect at adeeper level than usual and drink of the sweet wine of knowing that one we gave ourselve to so long ago.
Well, go for it...declare your own personal holiday! This little column is now concluded...time for my OWN holiday...hey baby...here I come!
